On a not so busy day during this pandemic, I wanted to buy some books to read in this time. Do you wonder why I haven’t read it until now? It’s so weird to say it but I don’t like reading, watching, listening to whatever is on trend. And The Alchemist was also like that once. And after all, I chose it due to curiosity.
I read The Alchemist with a comfortable soul without any expectation. But I was surprised when I read it, I already understood why this book was selling well only second to the Bible; received lots of compliments and even criticism.
The story started when Santiago also known as “the shepherd boy”, he dreamt 2 times about the boy who guided him to a treasure in the Pyramid. With his fiery youth, curiosity and love to explore the world, he decided to leave his hometown (Andalusia) to find the treasure of his life.
On every first day of his journey, he sometimes was quite confused about his dream. And then, he got a fortune-teller to decipher his dream but she just gave him a message, not a direction for how he could find the treasure. When he felt angry at her, he suddenly met a man, who was the king of the Salem area. The boy learned plenty of lessons, which consolidated his faith.
Santiago just kept heading to the Pyramid, of course on the road, there were always challenges. There was the time when he got scammed and lost all of his money, he had to work at a crystal shop for 1 year to earn enough money to continue his quest. There was the time he resisted the temptation of money and then decided to leave. The thing I remember the most is when he fell in love with a girl (Fatima) while crossing the desert. At that time, he decided to stay, marry Fatima and live a blissful life with her on the desert.
But after that, every signs and his girl encouraged him to keep going.
I think I know why the book was given a lot of mixed reviews. Should we settle down with the present? Should we put aside love and a fulfilling life to follow our passion? And for whoever believes in materialism and not spiritual things, this book may not be for them.
That is just the things I want to talk about in this book. And now, I will show you some ideas I resonate with:
– Everyday may be the day to live or to say farewell to your life.
– The things coming into the human’s mouth aren’t awful and toxic but it’s the awful and toxic things that come out of the human’s mouth.
– The things appearing one time may never reappear, but the same things appearing two times will undoubtedly appear three times.
– Before he gets his dream, the Spirit and Universe will test him for everything he learns along the way. The Spirit and Universe do that not because of evil purposes but because they want him to learn many lessons on his way to achieving his dream. It’s like the sentence: The darkest hour in the night is right before the breaking dawn or don’t die of thirst at the moment the date palm appears on the skyline.
This book contains lots of stories that got me thinking about everything that happens in my life even those haven’t happened yet. I think I should not spoil about this book anymore, if you are curious about it, buy it and read it!
